WA new COVID cases: Two new infections connected to unvaccinated backpacker

WA has recorded two new local COVID-19 cases overnight, adding to the five cases recorded on Christmas Eve.

Both new cases are linked to the infected French backpacker who arrived in WA from Queensland on December 12.

That takes the number of locally acquired cases to seven.

Health authorities say the 25-year-old man who sparked the cluster has the Delta strain, rather than the Omicron strain, of COVID.

“All cases related to this outbreak can be assumed to also be Delta,” a Department of Health statement read.

“WA Health’s contact tracing team is working to identify and follow up contacts and confirm exposure sites.”

To date, WA Health has identified 531 close contacts and 982 casual contacts.
