Temperatures to drop ‘close to freezing’ this week

Increasingly unsettled weather is forecast across the country over the coming days with “close to freezing” temperatures and some showers, according to Met Éireann.

Speaking on Newstalk’s Breakfast show, Eimear Flood from Met Éireann explained there is high pressure over Ireland and a low pressure to the east over Europe at the moment, giving “northerly airflow” and “a very cold air mass” over the country.

There will be “quite cold, but overall dry conditions for the next day or so”.

Things will be “turning more unsettled throughout the week” but remaining “pretty cold with temperatures around 2 or 3 degrees below average at the moment with some frosty nights as well,” she said.

Tuesday night will be similar to Monday night as temperatures will drop to -2 degrees over the southern half of the country, and temperatures will be “getting close to freezing over many of the nights this week,” she said.

However, it will turn windier from Wednesday which would help prevent frost formation.

Scattered showers feeding over the country in fresh northerly winds are expected on Wednesday with showers more frequent near western and northern coasts.

Temperatures will reach a low of between 0 to 3 degrees, though it will be less cold along Atlantic fringes.

Thursday will be cold with scattered showers.

There will be good sunshine at first, but it will become cloudier through the day from the northwest, Met Éireann has forecast.

Thursday will see highest temperatures of just 5 to 8 degrees. It will become windy overnight and rain will slowly extend to all areas with low temperatures reaching between -1 to 3 degrees.

Windy conditions and frequent showers will extend into Friday. Some showers will possibly turn to sleet in the evening, Met Éireann said.

Fresh to strong northerly winds with gales are likely near some coasts and over high ground.

Temperatures will range between 7-9 degrees with “an added wind chill factor,” Met Éireann said.

It will remain windy through the night on Friday with further showers.

Some showers of sleet or snow are likely over the north and west.

The weekend will be “near freezing or slightly below” overnight alongside showers, and Sunday is “looking to be cloudier”.

Early indications suggest it will turn milder heading into next week.
