Storm Barra arrives with powerful gusts of wind, heavy rain and snow showers

Powerful gusts of wind, heavy rain and snow showers have signalled the arrival of Storm Barra.

The storm has already caused some flooding in the south of the country as it made landfall on Tuesday morning and has left at least 12,000 homes and businesses without power.

Schools and third-level institutions will remain closed in parts of the country today, while heathcare services, public transport and power supply will also be affected by the storm.

Met Éireann has said the status red warning in place for counties Kerry, Cork and Clare could pose a “threat to life” as Storm Barra brings disruptive weather on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Severe, damaging winds are expected, as well as heavy rain. The status red warning came into effect in counties Kerry and Cork at 6.00am on Tuesday and 4.00pm on Tuesday in Co Clare.

An orange warning has been issued for counties Limerick, Waterford, Galway, Mayo, Wexford, Dublin, Louth, Wicklow and Meath.

Met Éireann has advised there is a strong possibility that the alert status of the counties currently in an orange warning may escalate to red.

Power outages

A disruption to power supply has been reported across the country on Tuesday morning, in particular along the west coast where 1,522 homes and businesses were without power in Cork. A further 256 customers were without power in Killarney, along with 51 customers in Gurranebane, Co Kerry.

In Dublin there were 1,549 customers affected by a power distruption in Blessington and a further 1,795 homes and businesses affected due to a dispruption in Malahide.

Significant power outages are also affecting areas in Kilkee, Co Clare; Dungarvan, Co Waterford; Cratloe, Co Clare; Carraroe in Co Galway; Aghagad in Co Sligo; and Pollerton in Co Carlow.

An ESB spokesperson said many more outages are expected due to the storm and the difficulty will be getting crews safely into red alert areas to repair lines.

Schools

The Department of Education has advised that all schools covered by the red and orange alerts should not open on Tuesday. This includes all schools, universities and creches in those areas.

All schools are advised to keep up-to-date with weather warnings in the event of any change in the status for their area.
