NSW COVID update: Premier reintroduces restrictions amid hospitalisation crisis

A range of restrictions will be reintroduced to help slow the current wave of COVID-19 infections, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has announced.

The restrictions will come into effect as of Saturday, January 8 and are set to remain in place until January 27.

From this time, non-urgent elective surgeries will be postponed and singing and dancing in hospitality venues will not be allowed.

Major events will go ahead as planned, unless NSW Health deems it a “high risk” event, then it will be assessed according to the premier.

It comes as the state reported another 38,625 COVID-19 cases and 11 deaths in the past 24 hours.

The numbers to 8pm Thursday take the state’s three-day total past 100,000 and cases in the past fortnight to 262,000.

The number of people in hospital rose 129 to 1738, including 134 in intensive care (up by three).

The daily figures came on the back of 112,725 tests, meaning one in three people getting a PCR was infected.

More to come …
