There’s a misconception that arty types can’t get to grips with the world of technology. But for Harkiran Kalsi, aka Harky, pictured above, the two are inseparable.
“For my art, a combination of tech and creativity is essential,” says the Forest Hill-based designer, illustrator, lettering artist and muralist.
“I did a graphic design degree, and that means you have to learn a lot of software and be tech savvy. You’re always thinking of ways of doing things better. Our world is tech-led – and you have to stay on top of it.”
Why the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G is great for creatives
For Kalsi, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G is therefore the perfect companion. “I can’t live without it, I take it everywhere,” she says. “I can create work for a client from scratch on this. Not just sketches, either – a final piece.”
Kalsi overcame numerous hurdles on her road to becoming a top freelancer. “I’m from a South Asian background, and people around me said there was no money in arts,” she remembers of a childhood where her mother, a brilliant painter, had passed on “the art gene”.
“I also struggled to find my type of art when it came to college.” Eventually she settled on graphic design and got a job in the public sector doing campaigns for councils and colleges in her native Warwickshire.
“But I knew I wanted to be in London,” she says. The problem was getting her foot in the door, but after lots of applications, Kalsi got a design role at the BBC.
Four years ago, she took the plunge and went fully freelance. “I was petrified, but it was also exciting,” she says.
Her brilliance paid off: she has worked almost non-stop for a range of top clients, from Foot Locker to agencies such as Pablo and Open Creates.
The glitch-free Galaxy Tab experience
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G has become her main tool. “I probably do 90 per cent of my work on it now,” she explains. “I really like how easy it is to use. It is quick, easy and intuitive. I also love the softness of the pen – it feels really natural and light and soft to the touch.”
The Galaxy Tab experience also provides a desktop-like interface that makes taking notes, sketching, annotating, signing and scrolling easy. “When I’m working on a sketch, it’s so simple moving layers. It’s very smooth and there are no glitches,” she says. And with its 5G capability, she can work on the go wherever she is.
As a designer herself, the tablet’s aesthetics also get the thumbs up. “It’s very cool, and the screen is bright, with great colours. And it’s slim enough to fit perfectly into my bag.”
